It’s a great feeling to hear the snap of the buckle and have the plane take off when you know you’ve made the last flight out. That’s what happened to me a few months ago when leaving Portland; I was heading out on the last flight before a big snow storm. The reader board read “on time” for every flight. The person next to me and I talked about some of our other favorite two-word phrases that make life better.

On Time

When you travel for business or pleasure, “on time” are two of the most beautiful words you can hear – especially in an airport. The same is true for meetings, but for meetings to start on time, it’s best to show up at least five minutes early. Whether it’s a meeting or an airplane, there’s nothing more wonderful than having things happen when and how you expect them to.

Thank You

Gratitude is a powerful act. Not only does saying thank you give others a good feeling, but it’s good for you, too. A sincere thank you is often all that stands between you and a happy customer, client, or friend.

Give Gifts

A carefully selected gift is a language of love, according to Gary Chapman. From parting gifts for focus group participants to showing appreciation to employees, giving gifts is a great way to show love and give hugs.

Quality Time

Spending quality time is another of the love languages that is suitable for business. From including your clients at the table at your next focus group to listening and spending quality time,  it makes a difference in your ability to deliver a better customer or client experience.

Yes, Ma’am.

I like to be called ma’am. My northern friends think it sounds insincere and it makes them sound old to be called ma’am. I think politeness and respect are timeless and ageless.

Summer Afternoon

What is it about summer afternoons? Henry James said, “Summer afternoon – summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” The warmth, the slowing down, the mindful moments, remind us how important it is to stay connected, show we care, and value the people who touch our lives.
