Mother’s Day is May 13, but what we learn from moms can’t be encapsulated in a single day. From what we learn about communication and relationships to what we discover as mothers guide us through life’s adventures, it all starts with mom. We learn to be better people from the examples moms set. Some of our best lessons in life come from moms.

“When your mother asks, ‘Do you want a piece of advice?’ it is a mere formality. It doesn’t matter if you answer yes or no. You’re going to get it anyway.” – Erma Bombeck

Communication

The first communication we learn is with our mothers. Most moms talk to their babies before they are even born, so mom’s is the first voice we hear. Babies are introduced to their mother’s favorite music in the womb, and even learn to recognize words from within the womb. Moms teach us the most important parts of communication: be kind, make eye contact, pay attention, and say please and thank you.

“A mother understands what a child does not say” – Jewish Proverb

Relationships

The bonding experience we have with our mothers affects every relationship we have thereafter. It is from mothers that we learn about safety, security, nurturing, and love. As we grow, those experiences help us navigate new relationships. We learn to listen carefully, be kind, and forgive – lessons that we carry into relationships with friends and family, colleagues, and customers.

The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness. – Honoré de Balzac

Moms Teach Us to Be the Stewards of Our Own Passion

Moms are the ones who shoo us away and tell us to entertain ourselves, the ones who fuel our passions, and the ones who tell us we can be anything we want to be. They set the example by being the best version of themselves in all they do, from their roles as moms to their roles as scientists, teachers, business professionals, and doctors.

“My mother said to me, ‘If you are a soldier, you will become a general. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope.’ Instead, I was a painter, and became Picasso” –  Pablo Picasso

Happy Mother’s Day!
