Marie Kondo has taken the world by storm with her book about the magic of decluttering. A male millennial client introduced me to Marie Kondo’s book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Reading it motivated me to declutter and organize my home and office and in the process, find more space and joy. As I read the book, I couldn’t help but see how many of her observations are applicable to marketing and marketers, and people and businesses of all kinds.

Less is more

“Letting go is even more important than adding up”

“To truly cherish the things that are important to you, you must first discard those that have outlived their purpose.”

“As you reduce your belongings through the process of tidying, you will come to a point where you suddenly know how much is right for you.”

Stand things up, including your packaging

“The key is to store things standing up rather than laid flat.”

“Stacking is very hard on the things on the bottom.”

“Try taking a pile you already have and standing it up”

Be Present

No matter how wonderful things used to be, we can’t live in the past. The joy and excitement we feel here and now are more important.”

“By handling each sentimental item and deciding what to discard, you process your past.”

“To truly cherish the things that are important to you, you must first discard those that have outlived their purpose.”

Be Organized

“The point in deciding specific places to keep things is to designate a spot for every thing”

“Clutter is caused by a failure to return things to where they belong”

“Life truly begins when you have put your house in order”

Comfort and joy

“As for you, pour your time and passion into what brings you the most joy, your mission in life.”

“The question of what you want to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life.”

“One theme underlying my method of tidying is transforming the home into a sacred space, a power spot filled with pure energy”
